The job of a fire alarm:
Fire alarms are required in most buildings, in accordance with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order and the Fire Risk Assessment. The job of the fire alarm is to detect any smoke / fire through the detectors and alert people throughout the building about the potential threat
Parts of a fire alarm system:
There are various parts to a fire alarm system when installed:-
· Smoke / Heat Detectors – These are installed into ceiling tiles or into solid ceilings. They will be the devices that are used to detect any heat / smoke that may be the result of a fire occurring
· Manual Call Point / Break Glass – These will be installed next to exit doors throughout the premises and can be pressed in the event of discovering a fire to alert everyone else in the building
· Sounders – These will be installed either on walls or into ceiling tiles. They will sound when the detectors detect a fire or the manual call points are pressed and alert people to the potential risk of fire
· Interfaces – The interface acts as a link between the fire alarm system and something such as a passenger lift for example. When the system detects a fire, a signal will be sent to the interface, the interface would then kick in and send a signal to the power supply of the lift. This then tells the lift to go into fire mode, return passengers to nearest floor level and be out of use until safe to use again.
How do you know what type of devices you need in your building?
We are an approved contractor for Static Systems PLC who will design your system. Sort out cause and effect. A programme of works and all the things in fact that make the difference between a good system and a great system
Fire Doors:
Within the package of a project, we may be asked about fire doors and linking them onto the fire alarm system. This isn’t a problem, on most projects and in most buildings the fire doors will be connected to a fire alarm interface. This interface will kick in when the system goes into fire and this will knock the power supply off for the doors, resulting in them closing to prevent any spread of fire.
